Gigi Hadid-inspired red cardigan outfit

Let a red knit layer supply the colour, with charcoal denim, comfortable loafers and a simple brown bag.

A fictional woman in layered red knits, charcoal jeans, black loafers, ivory socks and brown belt and bag.

A red cardigan can make everyday jeans feel planned before you add much else. Gigi Hadid’s layered red knits provide the documented starting point in Teen Vogue’s original style report. Our fictional model wears an independent version with charcoal denim, visible ivory socks and a brown bag. You can keep the colour idea while changing the knit weight, hem or shoes to suit the day.

Plan the pieces before shopping

Lay the cardigan over the underlayer before dressing. Two reds need not be identical, but compare them in daylight: tomato beside wine creates a different effect from two close warm reds. Choose that difference deliberately. A thin cotton top can replace the second knit if two sweaters feel bulky. Check that the cardigan sleeve moves over the layer beneath rather than gripping it at the elbow.

Six wardrobe pieces for this outfit: Red cardigan, Thin red or neutral crewneck top, Charcoal straight jeans, Black loafers, Ivory socks, Brown belt and shoulder bag.

Build the outfit in six steps

  1. Choose the leading red. Hold the cardigan near your face and decide whether its brightness feels right. Keep it as the main colour area. If you already own a deeper red, use it rather than buying a brighter one solely to resemble a photograph.
  2. Control the layer thickness. Add a thin crewneck underneath and move both arms. The second layer should not gather into ridges under the cardigan. Try an ivory tee if matching red feels too strong or if the weather is mild.
  3. Set the cardigan opening. Leave it open or fasten a few central buttons. Check whether the knit pulls between buttons when sitting. Adjust the cut or opening rather than treating stretched buttonholes as an intended styling detail.
  4. Add calm denim. Try charcoal straight jeans and assess the waistband with your chosen tuck. Avoid pushing a thick knit into an already snug waist. A small front tuck is optional, and a clean untucked hem is equally complete.
  5. Decide on socks and shoes. Wear the loafers with the socks you plan to use, then walk. Ivory socks create a visible pause above the dark shoe. Dark socks or a familiar flat remove that contrast while retaining the red-and-denim structure.
  6. Keep the carrying pieces simple. Add the brown belt only if useful, then the shoulder bag. Carry your usual contents and check the cardigan is not pulled off one shoulder. Keep jewellery small while the red supplies the main statement.

Adapt it to your day

For a working day in a casual office, exchange jeans for grey tailored trousers and keep the loafers. In cold weather, choose a coat that accommodates the sleeves without compressing both knits. A fine cardigan can also be buttoned as a top over a comfortable base layer. If red feels unfamiliar, start with a burgundy cardigan and one neutral layer underneath.

Questions you might have

Do the reds have to match?

No. Close reds give a tonal effect; different reds can be intentional. Check the combination together rather than relying on online colour names.

Are loafers essential?

No. A comfortable lace-up, simple trainer or ankle boot can do the same practical job; reassess the denim length with it on.

Peach blush offers a softer neighbouring colour to the red knit; the paired guide explains placement without prescribing a particular face shape. Read the paired makeup guide and the related technique guide.
