Victoria Beckham-inspired cocoa eye makeup

Keep cocoa depth close to the upper lashes, with a softer brown boundary and a quieter lip beside grey tailoring.

A fictional woman with warm lightly tanned skin and brown hair showing contained cocoa upper-lash depth and quiet brown-rose lips beside grey tailoring and a burgundy knit.

A cocoa eye adds soft depth beside grey tailoring without requiring a solid black lid. Victoria Beckham describes a smoky eye as her comfort zone in an original Wallpaper interview; that is the reference for this independent version. The fictional model shows a contained upper-lid shape with her own features. We simplify the effect for everyday use rather than presenting a celebrity’s exact kit, event makeup or product result.

Choose the colour jobs

Start with one eye-intended pencil that allows blending according to its directions. Cocoa can appear warmer or cooler against different skin tones, so compare the actual shade before adding shadow. Keep a small clean brush separate from the placement tool. Suitable remover belongs beside the mirror: subtracting an oversized patch is often more useful than repeatedly deepening the rest to match it.

Keep cocoa near upper lashes Leave the deepest area narrow. Soften only its upper boundary. Palette: Lash depth, Soft boundary, Lip, Top.

Apply it in six clear steps

  1. Prepare a familiar base. Use the coverage you want and soften its boundary. Avoid adding an unfamiliar heavy eye base just to make the colour stronger. Check how your chosen liner is directed to be used before placing it on the external lid.
  2. Map a small dark area. Look ahead with relaxed brows and decide where upper-lash depth should show. Keep the first shape shorter and narrower than the final idea. Each eye may need a slightly different drawing to create a balance you enjoy.
  3. Place short cocoa marks. Work just above the upper lashes in small sections. Keep product on the external lid. Join only enough marks to make the depth coherent, rather than immediately colouring the entire mobile lid or following the whole lower lash line.
  4. Soften the upper boundary. While the formula allows it, move the clean small brush at the top edge. Leave deeper colour close to the lashes and keep the softer brown area narrow. Check open-eyed before extending either the height or the outside end.
  5. Add shadow only if useful. A little eye-safe cocoa or taupe can soften the transition above the pencil. Press it where needed with the placement brush, then return to the clean brush for the edge. Extra shadow is optional, not a required second dark layer.
  6. Balance and edit locally. Apply a quiet brown-rose lip and optional blush or mascara. Remove misplaced eye colour with suitable remover before rebuilding that section. Put the grey jacket and burgundy top near your face and judge the finished contrast from a normal distance.

Adapt the placement and strength

For a gentler day version, stop after the blended pencil and use a sheer lip. For evening, deepen the line near the lashes before increasing the whole shape. Hooded lids and monolids may need more visible colour above a fold, but only if you enjoy the result. Keep the lower lash line bare if that feels clearer or more comfortable.

Questions you might have

Must smoky makeup include the waterline?

No. This version uses the external upper lid and upper-lash area only. Follow the intended-use directions of your own eye products.

Is black pencil necessary?

No. Cocoa, neutral brown or taupe can give different levels of contrast while retaining the soft-boundary idea.

Use the eyeshadow-boundary guide for a slower practice session before pairing the cocoa eye with the grey suit. Read the related technique guide and the paired outfit guide.
