Nicola Coughlan-inspired blue midi outfit for plus-size women

Pair a pale-blue A-line midi dress with a cropped ivory cardigan, flat silver Mary Janes and a navy bag.

A fictional woman in pale-blue midi dress, cropped ivory cardigan with two matching ivory puff sleeves, silver flat Mary Janes and navy handbag.

In British Vogue’s original interview, Nicola Coughlan discusses a blue gown with a 1950s-inspired silhouette. We borrow the colour and considered occasion shape for a different midi dress and cardigan combination. Our photograph features a fictional plus-size woman with her own features and proportions; it is not a celebrity photograph or a reconstruction of that gown.

Build the outfit in six steps

  1. Choose the dress waist placement. Look for a pale-blue A-line midi with a seam that sits comfortably on your torso. Compare front and back length over your bust and hips. A waist seam riding upward can indicate a bodice-length issue rather than a need for a tighter belt.
  2. Check the sleeve construction. The picture uses short, softly puffed sleeves. Test arm lifting and reaching across your body. A plain sleeve, flutter sleeve or sleeveless dress is an equally coherent option; choose the construction that gives you the movement and coverage you want.
  3. Add an ivory cardigan. A cropped cardigan ends near the dress waist in this version. Check its armholes over the dress sleeves before buying. Wear it open or fasten only the buttons that sit easily; a slightly longer cardigan can change the balance without spoiling the outfit.
  4. Fit silver Mary Janes. The illustrated flat shoes bring a small reflective detail. Adjust the strap so it holds the foot without pressure, and walk on a similar surface to your venue. A loafer or flat sandal can replace the strap style.
  5. Ground the blue with a navy bag. A compact navy bag adds a deeper colour without introducing a new bright shade. Test the strap against the cardigan and sleeve. A bag you can carry hands-free may be more useful than a tiny rigid evening clutch.
  6. Finish with one light detail. Pearl-like earrings repeat the light cardigan. Keep jewellery comfortable against hair and collars. Finally, sit and stand in the complete outfit and check whether the dress hem catches the back of your knees or your bag.

Adapt it to your day

For a garden party, choose a breathable dress lining and shoes that suit grass or paving. For an indoor dinner, remove the cardigan if the room is warm. Add opaque tights in colder weather if you want them, checking shoe fit again with the thicker layer.

A blue skirt and a comfortable blue or cream top can create the same broad colour story. Use your existing cardigan before searching for a cropped one. If you prefer trousers, choose pale-blue or navy trousers with the ivory knit; the silver shoes still supply the finishing detail.

Small changes that help
What you noticeTry this
Dress waist sits too highTry a longer bodice or a different seam position; do not tighten the waist to hold it down.
Cardigan sleeves bunchChoose more armhole room or a dress with less sleeve volume.
Midi hem feels awkwardPin several lengths with your actual shoes, then walk and sit before committing to an alteration.

Questions you might have

Is pale blue only for certain skin tones?

No. Try the fabric near your face and judge whether you like its effect. A slightly warmer, greyer or deeper blue can serve the same outfit idea.

Can I wear a longer skirt?

Yes. Keep the hem clear of the floor and check walking room. The cardigan and bag do not depend on a fixed midi measurement.
