A field jacket for smart-casual menswear

Use the field jacket as a practical outer layer over a light shirt, with charcoal trousers and brown boots.

A fictional plus-size adult wearing an olive field jacket, pale-blue Oxford shirt over a thin cream tee, charcoal straight trousers, dark-brown lace-up ankle boots and a simple dark-brown messenger bag.

The formula: Use the field jacket as a practical outer layer over a light shirt, with charcoal trousers and brown boots. Check its pockets and shoulder room with the things you actually carry.

A useful jacket over a complete indoor outfit: Olive field jacket, Blue Oxford shirt, Cream tee, Charcoal trousers, Brown boots, Messenger bag.

A field jacket can connect an ordinary shirt-and-trouser outfit to a less formal day. GQ’s September 2026 staff forecast includes field jackets. This olive version is our own combination on a fictional stocky adult, with a pale-blue Oxford and charcoal trousers. Confirm that the setting allows it; useful pockets do not make every jacket suitable for every workplace or forecast.

The jacket: fit it with the pockets working

Try the jacket over the shirt and thin tee rather than judging it against bare arms. Reach forward, lift your hands and bend an elbow. Check the upper back and sleeve room, especially if the jacket has a firm lining. Put a phone in a pocket you intend to use and see whether the front hangs comfortably. A practical bag can take weight that distorts a shallow patch pocket.

The shirt: keep the centre light

Pale blue separates olive from charcoal. The shirt can be worn over a cream tee if that feels comfortable, but the extra layer is optional. Try the collar both open and fastened, checking neck and chest room. Look at the shirt’s coverage near a window and assess it with the jacket removed. If the sleeves pack inside the field jacket, compare their thickness and cut rather than simply rolling them into a tight band.

The trousers: use a clear, comfortable line

Charcoal straight trousers make the outfit feel more considered than a second pocket-heavy lower half. Sit with ordinary pocket contents and check waist, rise, seat and thighs. A roomier straight leg or pleated cut can work without changing the colour idea. Do not rely on a tight belt to correct an uncomfortable rise or on an open jacket to compensate for a shirt that pulls.

Brown lace-up ankle boots repeat the earthy jacket colour at the ground. Check fit with your usual socks and set the trouser hem with the actual sole height. The fabric should clear the shaft rather than catching behind it. Comfortable Derbies or trainers can replace the boots when they better suit the route and level of formality.

Swap one job at a time

For an office that requires a smarter outer layer, use a navy blazer over the same shirt and trousers. For a weekend, exchange charcoal trousers for comfortable jeans and keep the practical shoes. A brown messenger bag can carry the day’s essentials without overloading the jacket. Test its strap over the shoulder and while seated, and adjust it for access rather than an illustrated exact length.

Before buying the jacket, try an existing overshirt or casual coat with these colours. Read the actual care and weather information, including any finish-specific instructions. Olive cloth is not automatically waterproof, and a rugged-looking boot is not automatically appropriate for every surface. The complete outfit should let you reach, sit and carry the bag normally after one simple adjustment of the layers.
