The formula: Start with a relaxed jacket, a skirt you can stride in and an untucked shirt. Keep the suit comfortable while seated, then set the hem with the shoes you actually wear.
A skirt suit can feel useful again when the shirt is allowed to behave like a shirt: a little visible cloth at the opening, a comfortable collar and room to move. British Vogue’s October 2026 runway edit includes softened skirt-suit styling. Our charcoal-and-white version is a separate practical combination on a fictional adult, with loafers for an ordinary working day.
Three anchors, each with a job
- The relaxed jacket supplies the outline. Try it over your actual shirt and underwear. Reach forward as though typing, then bend your elbows. Check upper-arm room as well as shoulders; a broad body does not automatically need longer sleeves. Decide whether you want to button the front and test that position while seated.
- The A-line skirt supplies movement. Choose enough room across the seated hips and abdomen, then walk at your normal pace. A waistband that feels fine standing may behave differently after a lunch or train journey. A vent or fuller cut can provide stride room without requiring a particular waist shape.
- The white shirt supplies contrast. Let the hem show at the jacket opening if you enjoy it. Check the front buttons while sitting and reaching. A softly draped blouse or comfortable shell can replace the shirt; this outfit does not depend on a tucked waist or an exact shirt-to-jacket length.
Set the lower half with flat shoes
Burgundy loafers bring one warm colour to charcoal. Walk in them with the tights or socks you plan to use, and check that the skirt stays clear of the shoes when you climb a step. A midi hem is a choice, not a fixed measurement. Pin another length before an alteration, looking from the side as well as the front.
Keep the indoor outfit complete
Remove the blazer and assess the shirt and skirt together. If the shirt is too sheer for your preference or its sleeves are uncomfortable, the jacket has only postponed that problem. Choose the coverage you enjoy. A structured black bag can hold the day’s essentials without filling the jacket pockets and pulling them out of shape.
Two routes from the same pieces
For a less formal office, wear the blazer with existing indigo jeans and retain the white shirt. For an evening, exchange the shirt for a simple dark top and add earrings you already own. Read the care labels before deciding whether both suit pieces fit your routine; their cleaning needs may differ even when the colours match.
Before leaving, sit for several minutes, reach for your bag and walk a full corridor. Keep any version that lets the pieces settle without repeated pulling. The useful result is a work outfit you can get on with, rather than a pose you have to maintain.
Use the outfit as a starting point. Adjust the fit, coverage and footwear to your preferences and plans.
